Wrist Pain Causes

The wrist is a very complex joint that contains eight small bones, with ligaments, tendons and muscles that connect the bones and allow free movement of the wrist and fingers.  Damage to any of those components will typically cause wrist pain.  Some common wrist pain causes include:

  • Repetitive Motions/Stress – Activities range from hammering to playing tennis to typing – all done repetitively can cause stress.  This stress causes the tissues around the joint to become inflamed, causing stress fractures and much pain.
  • Sudden Impacts – A fall in which you catch yourself on the palm of your hand can sprain, strain, or fracture the wrist.
  • Arthritis – Both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis cause pain to the joints, which includes the wrist.
  • Carpal Tunnel SyndromeCarpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the carpal tunnel passageway is compressed, causing pain and even numbness to the wrist.
  • Cysts – Cysts can cause a lot of pain to the wrists, even if they are small.

Wrist Pain Symptoms

There is not just one type of wrist pain symptom that constitutes a physical issue that needs medical attention.  Wrist pain symptoms could include sharp, stabbing pain, dull pain that increases with time, or an immediate injury.

Wrist Pain Treatment

If you suffer from wrist pain, there are quite a few things you can do to alleviate some of the pain, stress, and inflammation.  When you are in pain, you are looking for a wrist pain treatment that will provide immediate relief, but it’s important not to ignore options for long term healing and further injury prevention.

Immediate Relief

Support

  • Cho-Pat® Wrist Support – The Cho-Pat Wrist Support is the perfect tool to use while you participate in physical activities that require the use of your injured wrist.  It will offer support that protects the tendons and ligaments that run through the wrist, eliminating the chance that further injury will take place.
  • Ice – Icing your injured wrist will temporarily relieve the pain.  Simply place ice on the affected area for fifteen minutes, three times each day.
  • Medication – Speaking to a medical professional to find out what types of medications you can take to alleviate pain and reduce inflammation of the wrist.

Long Term Healing

          Stretching & Strengthening

  • StretchRite® – StretchRite is a tool that is designed to offer the overall body a good stretch.  When used properly, the wrists and forearms get the best stretch possible, allowing the muscles and tendons to heal.
  • Physical Therapy – Many patients who suffer from wrist pain will opt for physical therapy as their wrist pain treatment.  The physical therapist will offer you solutions and exercises that you can do in order to gain full motion and function of your wrist once again.
  • Surgery – Depending on the type of injury you are suffering from, surgery might be an option for you to consider.  It is often used as treatment for broken bones, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other similar or more serious issues

Wrist Pain Prevention

One of the most important aspects of wrist pain prevention is to participate in your activities with the correct technique.  If you play tennis, take lessons so that you know how to swing the racket properly.  If you type, don’t rest your wrists on the desk.  Additionally, wearing the Cho-Pat Wrist Support will reduce pressure that is put on the wrists, which will essentially be the wrist pain prevention that may work the most to your advantage.
