Carpal tunnel syndrome is a repetitive motion injury that becomes progressively worse over time.  It affects the hand and lower arm and is caused by a variety of factors.

The carpal tunnel is a passageway that is located on the underside of the wrist.  It protects the main nerve that runs to the hand, as well as the nine tendons that allow you to bend your fingers.  When the tunnel becomes compressed, the nerves are compressed as well, which is what causes carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms.  The good news is that proper treatment often relieves the symptoms and restores the wrist back to normal.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Causes

Some common carpal tunnel syndrome causes include:

  • Improper form while typing
  • Cysts or tumors in the carpal tunnel
  • Wrist dislocation or fracture
  • Diabetes
  • Work stress
  • Working with hand tools that vibrate the hand

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms

Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms include:

  • Tingling and numbness in the fingers and hands.  The numbness will often occur while grasping something such as a phone or steering wheel and could also occur first thing in the morning when you wake up.
  • Pain that shoots up the arm from the wrist or that shoots down to the fingers from the wrist.  The pain is typically felt on the underside of the arm or in the palm.
  • Weakness in the hand.  Carpal tunnel often makes it difficult, or even impossible, to grasp things, and you may have a tendency to drop items you try to pick up.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment

Proper carpal tunnel syndrome treatment is essential to getting your wrists and hands back to better health. Carpal tunnel syndrome is absolutely treatable, whether by simple means, or by larger means. The following are some carpal tunnel syndrome treatment suggestions for those suffering from the condition:

Short-Term Solutions

  • Cho-Pat® Wrist Support – The wrist support is designed to offer support to the wrist, diminishing the stress and pressure that comes with carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a comfortable option if your present situation does not allow for you to quit doing the activity that caused the carpal tunnel. Wearing the Cho-Pat® Wrist Support at night while you sleep will also eliminate the tingling and numbness that often occurs during the night.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Drugs – Speak to your healthcare professional to find out which anti-inflammatory drugs are right for your condition in order to best relieve the pain.
  • Physical Therapy – Learning new ways to stretch and work out the wrist will help you to diminish the pain, alleviate the stress, and reduce swelling or inflammation in the wrist. Your physical therapist may even have you use tools such as the StretchRite® to give your arm a proper stretch.
  • Surgery – If your condition has worsened to the point that your symptoms are very severe, you should speak to your healthcare professional about surgery options.

How to Prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome prevention starts with small things you can do on your own time. Carpal tunnel syndrome prevention includes:

  • Wearing the Cho-Pat® Wrist Support any time you participate in activities that include repetitive movements of the wrist and hands, as well as during activities that put ample pressure on those areas.
  • Taking breaks during those same activities.
  • Stretching your wrists, palms, and fingers periodically throughout the day.
  • Wearing the Cho-Pat® Wrist Support while you sleep.
  • Using proper form when you type, sew, and other similar activities.
